On March 3, 2022, CYPRECO of America, Inc., entertained seniors at the HANAC Harmony JVL Innovative Senior Center with a benefit concert featuring Greek music and songs bringing them exceptional joy following two years of lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Seniors danced throughout the two hour performance under the sounds of the bouzouki, the leading instrument of Greek music.
The concert which also kicked off CYPRECO’s live performances following the severe lockdowns, was the first of a series of free concerts the organization is offering in March 2022 with a sole purpose of bringing joy and entertainment to vulnerable and low income members of the Astoria community, such as seniors and young people who have suffered the most during the pandemic. Two additional concerts taking place on March 10th are given at the Brocoli Drama Theater in Astoria, New York. The first to benefit young people at the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens and the second for the Seniors of the Vallone Family Senior Residence.
In planning these concerts, CYPRECO took into great consideration the health risk factors which still exist and to ensure safety within government guidelines and protocols, as well as for convenience reasons, the organization felt it is most appropriate to present them at the exact locations where seniors and young people are serviced by local Social Services community organizations. Fantasia Music Group lead by bouzouki soloist and maestro Mike Stoupakis has been selected by CYPRECO to present these concerts in recognition of the group’s many years of experience and contributions to Greek music.
Apart from the entertainment factor, these concerts which highlight two of the most representative music genres of Greek music such as, Laika (popular folk) and Rembetika, are offered for the benefit of recipients from all ethnic groups and backgrounds within the Astoria community, as part of CYPRECO’s ongoing mission of spreading and promoting distinct aspects of Greek music among diverse audiences.
Referring to the successful March 3rd performance at HANAC, Elena Maroulleti the President of CYPRECO who envisioned the production of these benefits concerts stressed that, “our concert further verified how people from any race, creed or ethnic background can come together as one in a most festive manner to celebrate and appreciate through music the culture of Greece! The response of the seniors at the HANAC Senior Center was overwhelming and as requested, we are certainly considering to return with similar performances and even expand the concerts to reach more seniors who are in need of entertainment in other facilities in Queens and New York City.”
CYPRECO’s free benefit concerts for March 2022 are made possible in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council. Media Sponsors, AKTINA TV and AKTINA FM.
